YouTube Monetization Requirements 2025: Complete Guide to YPP

Getting monetized on YouTube is the first major milestone for most creators. Here's everything you need to know about the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) requirements in 2025.

Current Monetization Requirements

Standard YPP Requirements (Full Monetization)

To access all monetization features:

1. 1,000 subscribers
2. 4,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months

• OR 10 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days

1. Follow YouTube monetization policies
2. Have no active Community Guidelines strikes
3. Have AdSense account linked
4. Live in eligible country/region
5. Have 2-Step Verification enabled

Expanded YPP (Early Access Monetization)

YouTube introduced lower thresholds for some features:

1. 500 subscribers
2. 3,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months

• OR 3 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days

1. 3 public uploads in the last 90 days

Available features at 500 subs:

• Super Thanks
• Super Chat & Super Stickers
• Channel Memberships
• Shopping features

NOT available until 1K subs:

• Ad revenue

Breaking Down the Requirements

Subscriber Requirement

1,000 subscribers sounds simple but takes most creators 6-18 months.

Tips to grow subscribers:

• Strong CTAs asking for subscription
• Create series content (reason to subscribe)
• Consistent upload schedule
• Optimize channel page
• Engage in comments

What counts:

• All subscriber types (notified or not)
• Geographic location doesn't matter
• Subscriber age doesn't matter

What doesn't count:

• Closed/suspended accounts
• Spam accounts (YouTube removes these)
• Purchased subscribers (will get you banned)

Watch Hours Requirement

4,000 hours = 240,000 minutes of watch time in 12 months.

Breaking it down:

• ~333 hours per month
• ~11 hours per day
• With 50% retention on 10-min videos: ~48,000 views needed

Tips to increase watch hours:

• Create longer content (8-15 minutes ideal)
• Improve retention (hook, pacing, value)
• Create playlists (binge-watching)
• Publish consistently
• Focus on evergreen content (keeps getting views)

What counts:

• Public videos only
• Regular videos and Premieres
• Live streams count
• Embedded plays count
• Unlisted videos don't count
• Private videos don't count
• Deleted videos lose their hours

Shorts Views Alternative

10 million Shorts views in 90 days OR 3 million for expanded access.

Important notes:

• Shorts views don't count toward 4,000 hours
• This is a separate path, not additional
• Shorts monetization has separate revenue pool
• Easier for some niches (entertainment, comedy)

How Long Does Monetization Take?

Average Timeline

Subscriber milestone:

• Fast track: 3-6 months (viral content or established audience)
• Normal pace: 6-18 months
• Slow pace: 18-36 months

Watch hours milestone:

• Often achieved before 1,000 subs if content is long-form
• Or after, if content is short-form

After Applying

Once you meet requirements:

1. Apply in YouTube Studio
2. YouTube reviews your channel (typically 1-4 weeks)
3. If approved, link AdSense
4. Monetization features activate

Review timeline:

• Standard: 1-2 weeks
• During high volume periods: Up to 1 month
• Complex cases: Longer

Monetization Policies to Know

Content Guidelines

Your content must be:

• Original (you created it)
• Advertiser-friendly (most content)
• Not violating Community Guidelines
• Not reused content without significant value added

What Gets Demonetized

Yellow $ icon (limited ads):

• Controversial topics
• Sensitive events
• Profanity in first 8 seconds
• Violence (even educational)
• Adult themes

No monetization:

• Copyright strikes
• Community Guidelines violations
• Repetitious content
• Misleading metadata

Strategies to Get Monetized Faster

Strategy 1: Focus on Watch Hours First

Create content that maximizes watch time:

• 8-15 minute videos (sweet spot)
• Retention review in YouTube Studio, followed by editorial changes to test
• Playlists that encourage binging
• Evergreen topics that get searched

Strategy 2: Go Viral with Shorts

If you're entertaining/visual:

• Post 1-3 Shorts daily
• Hook in first second
• 30-45 second length
• Trending sounds/topics
• 10M views in 90 days unlocks monetization

Strategy 3: Leverage Existing Audience

If you have followers elsewhere:

• Promote YouTube on other platforms
• Collaborate with YouTubers
• Cross-post content
• Email list promotion

Strategy 4: Niche Down

Smaller niches = easier to stand out:

• Less competition
• More dedicated audience
• Higher engagement rates
• Faster community building

What Happens After Monetization

Revenue Expectations

Realistic first month: $50-200 (for most small creators)

Factors affecting revenue:

• Niche (CPM varies wildly)
• Audience location (US pays more)
• Video length (8+ min = more ads)
• Content type (advertiser-friendly = more ads)

CPM by Niche (Approximate)

Additional Revenue Streams

After monetization, explore:

• Channel Memberships
• Super Chat/Thanks
• Merchandise shelf
• Affiliate marketing
• Sponsorships
• Courses/Products

Common Mistakes That Delay Monetization

1. Buying subscribers/views — Violates TOS, accounts get banned
2. Reuploading others' content — Won't pass review
3. Inconsistent posting — Slow growth
4. Short videos only — Hard to hit 4,000 hours
5. Ignoring retention — Low watch time
6. Not asking for subscribers — Simple but effective
